ART ACTIVISM POST - AMANDA LOSARDO

 

This poster comments on both the ideal of symmetrical female beauty and the terror of being turned into a mere object, one on which cultural wars might be played out. I chose this photo because I resinate with it. A females body is a battleground, we have to constantly fight for our own humane rights. The right to have an abortion. "Kruger, who started in the 1960s as a graphic designer for Condé Nast magazines including Mademoiselle, has always aimed to introduce subversive meaning into media — shaking up the drone of images and words with which we are inundated."

Why Artistic Activism?

1.) "Social change doesn’t just happen, it happens because people decide to make change." 

I chose this quote because it's something I agree with. Change does not just happen, people have to make it happen. People have to get out there and tell the world what they disagree or agree with and push for a change. 

2.)"Art is a means by which to imagine the unimaginable, and artistic activism is the medium that can suggest it as a possibility."

I chose this quote because it's simply explaining the bringing together of the two. Art is beautiful, powerful. Artistic activism is taking something so beautiful to the eye and putting a message on it, making that unimaginable a possibility. 

An Introduction to Activist Art

1.)"The fight for equality and feminism was and still is another popular subject of activist art."

The fight for women to have equal human rights is something that is still going on and is still an active fight. The right over their own bodies, a BASIC human right. 

2.)"When the public is looking away from suffering that could be prevented or does not want to be confronted with it, activist art often creates a dialogue and forces people to think about these problems."

This one is very self explanatory for me, and very much something happening today. Social media makes it very hard for people not to pay attention anymore. Artwork is everywhere, in memes especially for users on social media. 

Artist Using Their Creativity to Drive Activism

1.) "There’s more than one way to be an activist, and that is to say, there’s more than one way to raise your voice and speak up in the name of change."

This struck me because I am now understanding more of the artistic ways of being an activist, not just going out into the street and protesting. What you create can make a huge impact and social media can also now help that. The artworks stay for years and years, they are right in your face forcing you to feel. Forcing you to look. 

2.)"Their creativity leaves an indelible mark, resonating far beyond their communities."

I chose this quote because it goes with my first quote, the artwork that people create to put out there and make change doesn't go away. It forces you to be a part of it.
