Art as Activism Post - Andrew Diaz

I chose this portrait because it drew my attention that you can still find fascination in things that are twisted or somewhat unnatural. Robert wanted to present that to the public even when he was battling against AIDS. He tried to find beauty in everything especially his obsession with skulls for that matter, and I do resonate with that fact.

 Why Artistic Activism:

1. "Artistic activism is not as simple as privileging creativity over clipboards. Petitions still need to be signed and people need to canvass door–to-door, marches need to be planned and politicians lobbied"

Art Activism isn't always about looking good for the everyone to see. It's all about pushing forward and inspire newcomers to join organizations for a good cause. The art is just merely the symbol that members are actually fighting for in life.

2. "Most important, these ideas and ideals inspire us to get up and out in the morning to change the world, and attract others to work with us."

Organizations aren't like school clubs but It's an everyday job for dedicated members of the community to make the world a safer place to live. It takes time, money, and hard work for activist organizations that try so hard to achieve in their goals to make life a little bit better for everyone and fighting against the system.

An Introduction to Activist Art:

1. "The Cuban artist said that it was important to her that the audience was unaware of the fact that the policemen’s actions were part of the work of art."

I find interesting to read that Activist Art doesn't have to be some form a portrait. It can also be used in literally action like the police riding their horses by separating the crowds into groups and directions. Even the Artist considered this form of art as symbol of activism.

2. "When a referendum to legalize abortion in Portugal failed in 1998, the artist created a series of paintings that highlighted the fear, pain, and danger of illegal abortions."

Paula shows how dangerous society can be when it comes to illegal abortions for women. Paula truly demonstrated the raw emotions and movement in her art of what women had to go through in the system. Her activist art certainly made an impact in society and finally changing the system of legalizing abortions.

The 25 Most Influential Works of Protest Art Since World War II:

1. "In the last year of his life, he produced indelible images that read as controlled rage against mortality and the ruination of AIDS — a proclamation against erasure."

Robert truly made his mission to demonstrate beauty in everything. Even though his obsession with skulls was considered punkish but tried to show it in a different light. During his last days before dying of AIDs, he spoke out in activism through his art of how life is just too short and that beauty is everywhere.

2. "The work comments on both the ideal of symmetrical female beauty and the terror of being turned into a mere object, one on which cultural wars might be played out."

Barbara has shown through his art about women's bodies are at a constant battleground with the political system. Especially in Iran where authorities have been pushing laws of women being forced to unveil in western outfits. Even after the revolution, women were still forced to wear the veil as well as following the law of the system in both public and personal.
