ART AS ACTIVISM POST - Javier Morales

I choose this specific poster because it caught my attention how they decided to give the message of such shocking news for that year, AIDS, with a giant poster that says little but is understood much more, accompanied by it's symbol, the pink triangle that was used by one of the most terrifying armies on the planet, The Nazis, creating such an eye-catching poster to break the silence about a deadly disease that took many lives at that time. It seemed incredible to me how much the message grew in two words and that still valid to this day.

WHY ARTISTIC ACTIVISM?

"It’s hard to say what art is for or against; its value often lies in providing us perspective and new ways to envision our world".

I always think that the value of art depends on each person's perspective, Someone can take it in a bad way, making it derogatory, and others in a way that gives a good message and tries to open the eyes of the community and make it understood what could be done to solve the issues that they dealing with.

"From Jesus’s use of parables to engage his audience, to dramatizing “this is what democracy looks like” in public squares around the world in 2011, working artfully makes activism effective".

Art with the activism is something that has been done for a long time, so much so that it is even reflected in religion, as mentioned here: "From Jesus's use of parables to engage his audience". It shows evidence that art is a good tool for activism and how it remains current until now, whether with a image or even a dramatization.

An Introduction to Activist Art

"The beginning of the Dadaist movement in the early 20th century led to the creation of several activist artworks".

It is impressive to me how activism art began to be used in such difficult times as the creation of the Dadaist movement during the WWI and how has transcended to this day.

"One of the most important goals of activist art is to encourage social and political change".

I agree with this specific part, because activism art has been dealing with world problems for a long time such as was seen in the first quote, activist art during the Dadaist movement until now with issues such as feminism.

The 25 Most Influential Works of American Protest Art Since World War II

"By the time President Reagan finally uttered the word “AIDS” in 1985, 12,000 Americans had already died".

It impress me how they could hide something so horrific for so long knowing that is is something deadly and even more so having records of how many people had already died until the day they decided to give the notice about this disease.

"He produced his own version of the flag, updating the text to read “A Man Was Lynched by Police Yesterday,” in response to the fatal shooting of Walter Scott by a South Caroline police officer".

Police brutality has become a very strong issue in the past, showing how they abused their authority to do what they say "It's right", simply to use it as an excuse and for their own benefit, and using a sing like that makes people look up and not allow this abuse of power to continue growing.
