Hello! My name is Isabella Guerrido, I’m 18 and a freshman at NJCU. A little about me is that I like soccer and
taking pictures of random stuff. I feed the stray cats in my neighborhood sometimes and I really like horror
movies (Common theme in this class lol.) My favorite movie is Quarantine, made in 2008. Some of my
ambitions include wanting to study Veterinary science and zoology. A creative practice I do is story writing, it's
very relaxing. Attached are some pictures I took because the view was pretty. Aside from that, I know the
coordinator at the food pantry closest to NJCU so I volunteer there regularly.
“Understanding Patriarchy”
Quote 1
“These changes in his thinking and behavior were triggered by his desire to be accepted and affirmed in a
patriarchal workplace and rationalized by his desire to get ahead.”
This quote caught my attention with the way it’s so realistic to what happens nearly everyday, kids who later
turn into men conform to standards placed on them by others, usually other men. Better known as toxic
masculinity. It’s sad to read that this has been happening since the late 1900s.
Quote 2
“Men are troubled, many conservative pundits say, because women have gone far beyond their demands for
equal treatment and are now trying to take power and control away from men…The underlying message:
men cannot be men, only eunuchs, if they are not in control.”
This quote highlights the problems some men face with women wanting rights. Certain men
would feel emasculated when they are not solely responsible for providing for their families. This
applies even in today's time, it's why the Project 2025 act is so big. There are men who feel
undermined by women's success and capability in the workplace.
“What Meme’s Owe to History”
Quote 1
“Similarly, memes offer a highly accessible and interactive platform of production that is ripe for challenge
and dissent, with disagreements and controversy only fueling the fire of a successful meme truly going viral.”
This quote is rather interesting because it shows that meme’s are ever changing but also that they can
cause conflicts. Those conflicts, in the end, help the meme to stay relevant while also giving the people
something interesting to watch unfold.
Quote 2
“All share local, low-brow production materials, as well as collective ownership. “Like modern art…our
internet age moves fast, BT Infinity fast, and people are always looking for the next big thing and the
next laugh.“
This quote stuck out to me because it’s right, like the art in history, it’s fastly evolving and new,
better, jokes are constantly being made. In history, there’s never just one painting that is
considered the best, there are multiple paintings from different era’s that are considered the best
of their time, much like meme’s.
“Meme’s Are Our Generations Protest Art”
Quote 1
“They reflect what’s happening in society, and help justify feelings of rage and fear while helping us
feel less alone”
This quote left a strong impression on me because it describes meme’s to a T. Meme’s were
created for people to interact with others who either find whatever meme it is funny or, people who
share the same opinion as the one creating the meme. Making them feel less alone as the quote said.
Quote 2
“The subjects of these activist memes, Jasper noted, are villains, and that’s a key part of protest art in
general—in identifying social problems, the genre needs villains.”
A pattern in meme’s is indeed the need for villains. However, some meme’s become popular
without the use of antagonizing someone or thing. For example, the recent meme that was
trending a few months ago, with the boy holding up four fingers, had no villain. It was just
a silly pose. So while I think this quote is right, it’s not always the case for some memes.
