My name is Kelly Bartko I'm a transfer student and a junior. This summer I was able to do a lot of traveling, I visited family in Delaware, Virginia, and Florida. I was also very fortunate to go on a big trip to see family that moved to Scotland(Pictured is me and some of my family in front of a castle in Scotland), we also stopped at Iceland on the way. I also coach volleyball to kids ages 8-16 for a club filler company. And I enjoy being outside, whether it's fishing or just walking around a park. My favorite art is one that uses mixed media. My goal for now is to be an art teacher.
1- Understanding Patriarchy by bell hooks
“I was always more interested in challenging patriarchy than my brother was because it was the system that was always leaving me out of things that I wanted to be part of.”
During this part of the passage they talk about the differences growing up in a patriarchal household, brother to sister. Growing up my life was nothing like the author went through, I have an older sister and even with the “feminine roles” we never followed anything. The author also explains how she wasn't allowed to play a game with marbles because it was masculine, said her father. My favorite movie was and still is Disneys Cars; if I were to have wanted a toy growing up I would have gotten it no questions asked because there would have been no thought of “she can't have that, it's not feminine.”
“To end male pain, to respond effectively to male crisis, we have to name the problem. We have to both acknowledge that the problem is patriarchy and work to end patriarchy.”
This quote conveys that agreeing that there is an issue is the first step in order to change in the long run. It's unbelievable to me that some people still do not understand that change is inevitable and change like this is necessary in order for us to progress in the world overall. I feel like more now than ever lots of people are speaking out about the male vs women type of world we live in.
2- What Memes Owe to Art History | Artsy
“What memes expose today matches the guerrilla-style insurrection of their delivery. From the surprise attack delivery of the iconic Rickroll a decade ago, to curators tapping today’s online activists to put on the next ground-breaking exhibition, meme culture has its own (accelerated) history. But what memes owe to 20th-century art and its discontents can’t be overlooked.”
I found this quote to be interesting because I feel like we see so many different types of memes and other photo brain rot type of images but somehow some stick out more than others. For example I remember having seen images with gorilla heads but wasn't aware that it was from or inspired by the Guerrilla Girls.
“…reveals how the artistic lineage of memes is spun out of some of 20th-century art’s most revolutionary ideas. Today’s meme culture adopts the techniques of postmodernist movements like Pop, performance, and conceptual art to buck their precedents in order to subvert the status quo.”
Its crazy to me to think that memes have been around forever and that they were just thought of and interpreted differently. I feel like more recently memes have been found to be something funny rather than make sense. Something that makes someone laugh has more substance than something that makes sense.
3- Memes Are Our Generation's Protest Art | VICE
“At their core, all memes, regardless of their politics, are a tool for expression. “Memes help to articulate specific points, amplify ideas, and intensify emotions,” Burroughs said. “Something can be comedic or a joke and still be incredibly poignant.”
They really are just tools or a platform in which to get something around or talked about. Depending on how you advertise something determines weather it will be seen or if people find it worth watching.
“Memes can spread far more quickly than the songs or art projects of previous generations, and there’s such a low barrier to entry that anyone can make them; they can go viral in a matter of minutes.”
Nowadays its very easy for something to go viral and be known by many. The technological advance has us far ahead of the other generations by means of anything becoming famous and or spread around to many in different places.
