Self Introduction Post - Shayna Pullo

Hey! My name is Shayna, my major is graphic design. I am 22 years old currently in my third year in college. This is my first year in NJCU, I am excited for this new chapter to graduate in this school and also the fresh start of the fall season made me set goals for this season to be more productive and start reading a book which I already have, and I am loving it, it’s called “Who Will Cry When You Die”. One of my favorite quotes so far and that I am currently applying to my life is “If your priorities are not on your schedule, other people’s priorities will take up your space”

I am a Sagittarius, my favorite hobbies are to get to know new places, road trips, eat and go to the gym. This summer I found myself enjoying new places and taking pictures with my camera of what I consider beautiful and art in my eyes.

One of the road trips that I made this summer was to Catskill, NY. I was really excited to stay there for a few days. I took my camera with me to my first hike there and I took this picture of the squirrel which is one of my favorite pictures.

Understanding Patriarchy by bell hooks

“We have to both acknowledge that the problem is patriarchy and work to end patriarchy.”

For a long time, many women have endured suffering at the hands of patriarchal husbands. I believe there has been confusion about what it means to have power as the head of a household, and as a result, many women have been dehumanized by being deprived of things necessary for their physical and mental well-being.

“In the early years of our relationship he was extremely critical of male domination of women and children.”

I like to look beyond the surface and believe that there are often deeper reasons that we overlook. Our actions are shaped by our upbringing, and if we engage in behavior that harms others, especially our own wives, it's likely because we also grew up in households where mothers suffered, and basic human values and respect were not taught.

What Memes Owe to Art History

“Memes are the democratizing medium of our collective digital present.”

Memes are a great way to liven up our conversations in chat and prevent them from becoming mundane or solely. I think they are one of the best creations in the internet.

“Memes are essentially 100 years of text art boiled down into your feed,” said professor Darren Wershler, research chair at Concordia University, who argues that memes are a type of “everyday Conceptualism.”

I definitely consider memes as an “everyday conceptualism” and that is even one of the ways I use them. Yes, it's very common if you're laughing at something in the chat and you send a meme about someone laughing, but most of the time I just send a random meme that has nothing to do with the conversation and I just sent it because I think it's funny.

Memes Are Our Generation's Protest Art

“Under Donald Trump specifically, Burroughs says, memes have grown in popularity as a way to express political opinions, similar to how George W. Bush’s presidency gave rise to liberal blogs.”

I think my first time seeing so many memes used for a politician was Donald Trump to express their opinions or mockery of politics or him. Memes have become a big thing these past years politically, but I think it is a less violent way to protest.

“Memes can spread far more quickly than the songs or art projects of previous generations, and there’s such a low barrier to entry that anyone can make them; they can go viral in a matter of minutes.”

Memes can become popular faster because they didn’t have social media like now and social media is a big thing nowadays so something simple like a meme can become popular within a few minutes since it’s a controversial meme trying to defend something or someone.
