Curatorial Activism Post - Chahinaze Mama

Chapter 2, Process by Steve Duncombe and Steve Lambert

1: "Physical and mental space is key for creativity. A space away from the ordinary routines, obligations, and distractions of daily life."

I chose the quote because I think a clear head space is a great way to get deep into your thoughts and creativity. Doing things like listening to music to calm down while doing a task can help us focus. I actually do that when I need to gather my thoughts or complete assignments. Taking away distractions around me is also important because it allows me to get into a clear mental head space when needed. Especially when it comes to art or brainstorming ideas it's important to be able to keep distractions out.

2: "We are often our own worst enemies when it comes to being creative. As artists and activists, we frequently self-censor our ideas because they aren’t clever or creative enough. Instead of striving to create masterpieces, we need to give ourselves permission to experiment in disasters: to muck about and test the ridiculous, absurd, silly, and, above all, stupid things."

I agree with this so much I think when it comes to our creativity, we are our biggest criticizer. sometimes we can be too harsh and not open to making mistakes. we find the need to get everything perfect on the first try. However, I think when it comes to being creative and creating, we have the freedom to experiment try new things and make mistakes. Making mistakes helps us grow our creativeness and learn more.

3: "Research and observation can be done anywhere, from noticing the colors and forms around you to reading a celebrity gossip magazine. Because research provides content for our work, we can find insights and inspiration in every-thing: history, economics, philosophy, popular culture, subcultures, current events, or simply people-watching."

Research is important when it comes to learning the different perspectives on art that surround us. it provides us with insights that help us gather information on art history or present events about art. I think there is so much to learn about when it comes to art because of the many forms' art comes in. research is broad when it comes to art. it can either be found online, in magazines, books, or even tv. regardless there is an unlimited amount of information to be learned about when it comes to art.

Towards a Curatorial Activism - Dr Maura Reilly

1: "After even a cursory glance at art world statistics such as these, which are (sadly) almost identical in every mainstream museum throughout the world, it is evident that sexism and racism have become so insidiously woven into the institutional fabric, language and logic of the mainstream art world that the inequities in representation often goes undetected."

I chose this quote because racism and sexism play a big part when it comes to the art world. It becomes harmful to artists involved. I don't think it is talked about a lot, but it is very common. The inequalities artist face has gone on for a long time. This is mainly because it usually goes unnoticed or is just unspoken about. I think it should be talked about more and brought to the knowledge of those around the art world.

2. "What I do know is that, as we venture forward into this new century, it is imperative that art institutions examine not only their putative subjects, but their ideological biases as well. This will involve rethinking methodologies and iconographies for what they say, and do not say, about the constructions of race, gender, class and nation. In such cases, critical theory is not enough; we must re-examine cultural objects and social practices to understand the patterns of everyday life that shape the past and inevitably imprint the future."

Bias effect the art world. Biases based on gender, race, or class can affect the opportunities an artist receives. I think this is wrong and the social status or identity of the artists. The talent an artist brings should be a factor of what's important or what matters to art institutions.

What is Curatorial Activism? - Dr Maura Reilly

1.  "If you don’t believe that the art world is sexist and racist, it’s time for you to come out from under your rock. Current statistics demonstrate that the fight for equality in the art world is far from over. Despite decades of postcolonial, feminist, anti-racist, and queer activism and theorizing, the art world continues to exclude Other artists—women, non-white and LGBTQ artists."

- I chose this quote because like I said in the last quote I quoted, sexism, and racism is a topic that is not spoken about often. Protests on issues like these involved have been present for a while and till now nothing has been done or changes. And i think change needs to be brought.

2. "These are not issues from the past, folks. This is now. We are living and working in an art world that cares little about racism and sexism, a world that appears to pre-date the women’s/civil and LGBTQ rights movements."
- Jumping off the last quote issues in the art world need to stop being ignored and actually show change. Current issues are still going, and artists are facing consequences to neglectful art institutions.
