Part 1 Curatorial Activism defined
The Book “This is What I Know About Art” by Kimberly Drew and the essay “Towards a Cultural Activism by Dr. Maura Reilly both them talks about the inclusivity, both of them talks about how to use art as a key for any social key, they show that art is not an “aesthetic thing”, it can be something political and even can influence in the racial and gender topic. A part from the book “This is What I Know About Art” by Kimberly Drew, there’s a topic that I really liked and it has the title “Find a Space” and it says: (Physical and mental space is key for creativity. A space away from the ordinary routines, obligations, and distractions of daily life. What the author Virginia Woolf called “A Room of One’s Own.” pg. 52.), I found it attractive i9n the way how it talks about to be careful of our mental space a place where we do feel relaxed and a place where our body and mind feels safe and personally when I am feeling stress and even anxiety I feel like all the world goes on me and everything is there only to hurt me and it doesn’t let me continue working in my art and my projects but when I find my safe spot and make my mind relax it starts feeling like everything it’s easy and I start having a lot of creativity and makes me feel like i can do my decisions without any fear, for me having a safe spot where my body and even more important my mind, it makes a person to feel that even if you are not having a good day or you are feeling like you have a creative block at the end of the day when you find a safe spot for you everything is going to be better and you will find a solution, and that’s why this part in specific of Kimberly Drew Book is stuck in my head making me to remember that I have my safe spot when I start having any problem that arises. Now how can the authors be activists? An easy way to respond this question can be challenging the politics with their own creations like their books, but the way how they do it is the main thing for me, like creating an inclusive space for people who has a different sexuality or people that are coming from a different country and make them feel that they are not alone and make the world to open the eyes and see that we can do the changes, motivate the thousands of people that we can make the difference and connecting with them with their books, stories and even more is the push that is needed, making something that is different or do something never seen before attracts the attention of the public and try to make them to react and join the cause, and that is how this people like authors, historians, and more are activists.
Part 2 Art Example
El Diablo is a representation of empowerment of women, confronting the patriarchal, I liked this one because usually the devil is represented as a man figure to show how powerful is, but using the image of a woman with a traditional mask show something different and that no matter with which person is represented the message it still communicating it, this image is activist it shows how it is challenging the stereotypes showing that those qualities are not limited by gender.
This picture of the hand with the flag is a representation of immigrants trying to accomplish their future representing their country in a place that is not their home, it's a tough situation even though when its called something illegal; to stay in a different country but maybe the people that had to make the decision of going away from their home it can be for a reason, this picture can be called an activist image because is showing that no matters how difficult is to stay in a different country their country still with them and going away from them doesn’t mean that they will stop being from that country.
