Perfomance Art Activism Post - Shayna Pullo

PERFORMANCE ART ACTIVISM POST

Widewalls | Yoko Ono - A Groundbreaking Artist, Activist and Fighter

1. “Even though she was frequently criticized and even ostracized by the press and the public, she fought her way through all the hardships with her creativity and challenging artwork.”

Activist artists go through a lot of hardships in the art world to have the same exposure and opportunities as the other artists. Yoko Ono is one of the activist artists who was criticized for her work because it was considered as “too radical”.

2. “This was to become their first “Bed-in for Peace,” project which was part of the peace movement that gained much publicity.”

Yoko Ono and John Lennon married in 1969, they invited the press to their hotel room where they stayed in bed for a week, it was part of their project called “Bed-in for Peace”. Which was part of their peace movement. Yoko Ono is well known for her permanence art and her main focus now is to spread peace with her projects.

Hispanic Executive | Interview with Shaun Leonardo - Performance, Pedagogy, and Philosophy

1. “I attribute my work ethic to them.”

Shaun Leonardo’ parents' background of immigrating to this country and working hard until they retired made Shaun Leonardo have the desire and the mindset to also work hard for his dreams. Having immigrant parents makes you want to do anything with desire and love that can honor their names. That part reminded me of the book “ The Art of Activism” page 17 talks about how one of the main reasons for people “stepping out the curb” is personal and emotional reasons.

2. “For a white student, particularly a young white student, seeing the mode of expression of an artist of color can shift as much of their worldview as it does for a student of color.”

A student of color has their own views and opinions on art and when a white student sees art made by a person of color, they can also see what that person was feeling. That can change their opinion on various topics that the art is trying to convey and make them relate to a student of color. Here it is shown that art activism is a way to connect people from different cultures.

Performance Art - Thoughts

The performance art that I could do is about the thousands of thoughts that a person has in the day; I give importance to this topic because it is what controls people at all times and influences them to make positive or negative decisions towards their life.

I would bring two giant canvases to a public place where many people go, like a street full of shops, and I would ask different people to write a positive thought or word on one canvas and something negative on the other. When the two canvases become filled, one with positive words and the positive one, it would be the perfect contrast of our good and bad thoughts. People who can see the two canvases will realize that just as there are negative thoughts, there is also a bright side where you can try to think positive and vice versa. For the people who has healthy mental health will make them feel grateful to have a positive mindset since they will see all the negative words and pessimisctic way of thinking that they are not going through.
