Performance Art Activism Post - Juan Ferreira

The first quote I have taken from “Widewalls/Yoko Ono” comes from the middle of the article which says “Although eclectic in nature, her work has been often greeted with incomprehension, mockery and even rage.” Showcasing how there are many John Lennon fans who dislike her work because she is blamed for his separation from The Beatles band. I can also see how her work may be considered “eclectic” because of the challenge with understanding her work sometimes. However art can be very versatile in its efforts and understanding. The second quote I have taken from this reading is towards the end of the reading “Almost 50 years after the publication of her book of conceptual instructions Grapefruit Yoko Ono has picked up where she had left off.” The reading mentions how she is an older version of herself today and is still in the creating art business. It is truly inspiring because no matter how much work someone has put out there, there is never an age where you become too old for it. There is always more to be inspired by and Yoko Ono is a great example of that, still making artwork and music today.

From the Hispanic Executive with Shaun Leonardo, I liked the part where he says “Especially as I grew into my path as an educator, I found it equally important to share the work of my colleagues and those artists of color that inspired me with both young folks that I identified with (meaning those that looked like me) and white kids.” I believe this is how most artists should view their artwork and share it. There is a lot of fear of racial background that sets invisible limitations in artwork. I think having an equally bounded mindset where black, hispanic, and white artists all should receive the same amount of success and influence is important. Shaun doesn't see any line between them and neither would I. The second quote I have taken from this reading is when asked to speak to the challenges of our new normal and how they have affected his practice, he answered “I think the larger challenge surrounding not only the pandemic but also the converging crises of racial justice, reproductive rights, and everything else is the immediacy with which we are being called upon to act.” followed by feeling compelled to act and to respond. It shows just the type of urgency artists need to create activist work that will cause and effect the community in a positive, impactful way. One who decides to dedicate their artwork to something like this can create very powerful works.

The definition of performance art I have put together is centered around second generation American children of immigrant parents who do not know how to speak their own cultural language, other than the American based English language. The performance would be when one parent (or student) goes to speak their native language to the other centered student while standing up (the other student sitting in a chair). Then the student sitting down would not respond at all because they do not know how to respond because they do not understand what is being spoken to them. This is how I would showcase that performance with intention to create awareness with students who do not know their own native language. This might encourage them to search for and study the language more eagerly with more intent to learn it.
