What is my project?
My project is called "Intertwined". It will focus on the physical similarities parents have with their children ( my mother and I ). Creating an art project that highlights the resemblance between a mother and a daughter can be a powerful way to explore the themes of identity, heritage, and familial bonds. By focusing on shared experiences, values, and traits passed down through generations, the project can focus into the signifiant ways in which these relationships shape who we are. this can be achieved through various mediums such as photography, painting, or mixed media, where the visual similarities and differences are compared to tell a deeper story. For instance, a series of portraits capturing both subtle and overt likenesses, paired with personal narratives or shared memories, can evoke a sense of continuity and connection.
Furthermore, such a project can also examine the impact of family traditions, beliefs, and behaviors on the identities of both mother and daughter. By incorporating elements like family heirlooms, traditional attire, or even recreations of past family photos, the artwork can emphasize the ongoing dialogue between past and present. This approach not only highlights physical resemblance but also the emotional and psychological ties that bind family members. Through this exploration, the art project can offer viewers a profound understanding of the complexities and beauty inherent in mother-daughter relationships.
In the video, the clips will cut back and forth between my mother and I showing the differences yet similarities in how we do our makeup. In some ( most ) of the clips, you can see me in the background helping my mother straighten her hair. That those similarities can reflect a strong bond and connection, as well as the influence of upbringing and genetics. These resemblances can be a source of identity and understanding, providing a sense of continuity and belonging within the family.
Which artists have inspired you?
Yoko Ono - All Ono's arts are about tapping into those hidden emotions and bringing them to the surface. She uses a lot of interactive pieces that invite the audience to participate, which often leads to a deeper emotional connection. For example, her "Cut Piece" performance asked viewers to cut away pieces of her clothing, exposing not just her physical self but also the vulnerability and emotions tied to that act. Another piece, "Wish Tree", encourages people ro write down their wishes and hang them on tree, making their private jokes and dreams public. Through these works, she creates spaces where hidden emotions can be safely expressed and shared.
Shaun Leonardo - Leonardo's performances really dig into hidden emotions, especially around personal and societal struggles. He often uses his own experiences and those of others to highlight themes like vulnerability, identity, and resilience. For instance, in his performance "I Can't Breathe", he reenacts moments of police violence, which brings out intense emotions related to fear, anger, and grief. These performances create a space for the audience to confront and process these deep, often hidden feelings. It's a powerful way to encourage dialogue and reflection on issues that are sometimes hard to talk about.
