Performance Art Intervention
(Kazimir Malevich)
"Black Square"
The black square is a simple yet well thought out piece of art. I think its symbolizations are endless as they depend on the viewers perspective. But to the artist, Kazimir Malevich, it held a political and deeper meaning during pre-revolutionary Russia. The black square was hung in the corner of a room representing the saint or icons that were hung in the corner of Russian homes. His artwork was his way of fighting back and gaining control.
(Yoko Ono) “Cut piece”
I chose Yoko Ono’s performance art called “Cut Piece” because I think her idea was unique and executed in a way that would reach an audience without using words. She gave a message through her performance. She displayed her vulnerability to strangers and to an audience by getting her clothes slowly cut off, one by one. Her message displayed a vulnerable women yet also a women with power. i loved the idea of having the audience interact and be apart of the performance. giving the audience a chance to participate and be apart of the message she was giving.
QUOTES:
- "But art is also used to challenge authority and privilege, often precisely by challenging how those in power see the world. That privileged perspective is confronted when artists represent reality indifferent lights, showing the world from different perspectives." (Page 138) The first artwork that i added, "Black Square", i think is a great example of when art can be used to challenge authority. Artwork can be used as a way fight back. protests are also an example of this. Sending a message through art is powerful especially when its used against powerful; authority as it can as dangerous.
- "Art is powerful. It’s a way we can express our understandings of the world as it is, and articulate our visions for how it could be. In this way, all art is political, whether the artist intends it to be or not." (Page 137) i agree with this quote a lot. i dent think people realize how art can be powerful at times and how can have an impact on many of things society may go through. whether its a painting, a poster at a protest, or a art performance a message is always being shown to an audience. depending on the perspective of a person the message can persuade or inform the audience on issues or importance ideas. Art also brings out the creativeness in people. its a a form of expression for many and i think that it self is very powerful. being able to express your self not with words you say but art you create.
- "Culture is all around us. It’s the system of meanings that allows us to understand our world and to communicate this understanding to others. Culture is necessary for our very survival. Without it we wouldn’t know who or what we are, nor how to function beyond rudimentary biological life." (Page 132) Culture is a big part in any of our lives. It may help mold our identity's or perspectives and beliefs. It also influences our day to day lives and interaction with others. our ability to relate and differentiate between each other is also really nice as there are different cultures that surround us.
- "As individuals, we all have our own likes and dislikes when it comes to culture, and this is all well and good. But as artistic activists, we have to be attuned to what other people, particularly those who are not artists or activists, are interested in not what we think they should like, but what they actually do like in today’s complicated and compromised world." (Page 158) I think allowing the audience to have there own opinions and respecting those opinions is important. especially when it come to culture because many may have a different perspective on things depending on their own culture or others. So including all different opinion and cultures as an artist is important in order to include all and display things people are able to relate to.

4. Write down your thoughts creating a poem as you go.
5. Take a step back, read what you wrote and reflect.
6. Before you go name the tree.
INTRUCTION PIECE DESCRIPTION:
Yoko Ono's wish tree inspired my instruction piece. Her wish tree was a visual representation of peace and i think trees are good way to symbolize peace. For my instruction peace i chose to have the audience go outside pick a tree of there choice and take in the environment and its details. it gives the audience a chance to let loose and just absorb what's around them for a couple minutes. Paying close attention to what makes the tree unique and different then all the other trees that surround them. Asking the question "what is the tree feeling?" is a way to really "connect". Nature's beauty brings calm and inspiration, helping us relax and enjoy the world around us. It’s important because it gives us life-sustaining resources and shows how all living things are connected.
