Assignment "This is What I Know About Art" reading - Juan Ferreira

The first quote I decided to take from the reading of This Is What I Know About Art by Kimberly Drew, "I had been out of college for just under a year and was really starting to feel grounded in the art world"(page 36). Considering all that this woman has been through including the switch of majors during college, made it so that her art studies are digitally viewed,  and even coordinating her original art walk event in which she aimed for "as many Black people as possible " to see the show, you can say that she is well suited to be doing this art thing. Her many inspirations of artists really show that she is passionate about being an artists and showing other people to view her progress.  It is also satisfying to watch her growth in the readings to real life activist work she's completed.

The second quote I picked up from the reading is "On my own social media pages, I wrote angry tweets about the lack of diversity, and by the end of each weekend, I had fielded interviews with a local art blog and The Huffington Post."(page 42) This shows just how aware the author is when it comes to Black artist's art recognition. When it is hard to find, she makes it well known! Being the second time she gets in trouble for this (the first time being during her college career), it is fair to recognize her growth and impact from then to now if they know about her firing back at them. Her job at the Whitey Museum has to have active diversity for the author to give it its true recognition.

The third and final quote I have taken from the readings is "I knew I was changing the Met, but I also knew in my heart that all of that effort could be better utilized at a grass roots level." (page 58) I really admire the author's passion for exhibited art, or even art concepts as a whole. It seems like she works very hard on what is in front of her to do and, as we can see, has achieved a lot and has worked alongside many other great artists on sensitive subjects like black discrimination or online sex chat rooms. Regardless, you can see that she tries her very best on producing the best results, which inspires me to work on my art skills and analyzation right now!

The artwork of Deborah Roberts in “The Breakthrough Women” collection, you can see her use magazine pictures of powerful Black women and create a picture out of them. Combining the arms, hands, torso, and even eye to eye. “Rihanna’s eyes, Michelle Obama’s arms, and Issa Rae’s hands, among others.” Individual sections of powerful women who take care of business and leave a mark! A potential theme or title that can fit along with this is a “women of power” theme. Creating activist art that you can publish online or even onto other magazines which depicts a collage of famous women who have made a change in the current, and past, decades. It is important that we recognize these women and that is exactly what Deborah Robert was trying to portray in her art.
