(Wall of nursing department lounge)
The issue that I chose is the lack of access and affordability of health care. Our health in majority of instances is what ensures quality of life, our ability to be productive and to maintain a healthy mental well-being. But for many people in the US the cost to visit the doctor or buy medication desperately needed becomes a life-or-death situation. According to the American Journal of Public Health an estimated amount of 45,000 annual deaths is related to a lack of health insurance in the US. "About 1 in 10 people in the United States don’t have health insurance. People without insurance are less likely to have a primary care provider, and they may not be able to afford the health care services and medications they need." (U.S Department of Health and Human Services)
On my poster it says, "Healthcare Is a Human Right" and I believe this is true because everyone regardless of race or where a person stands in society's social scales should have access to healthcare and be Racism plays a huge part when it comes to speaking about the healthcare system. In a separate class of mine we read an article on the statistics of the high rates of maternal deaths for black women compared to women as a whole in the US. The statics (shown in picture) we read were to say the least shocking and unbelievable. especially when it comes to comparing the different to the other countries listed.
I placed my poster in the nursing departments lounge area but before I did that, I wanted to stop a couple of nursing students and introduce the topic I chose for my project. However, I couldn't find any so decided to ask my friends who watched as I was doing this project. I explained what it was about and why I thought it was important and at the end some of my friends shared their thoughts on why they agree. I wanted to speak with nursing students specifically because of the fact that they will be our future when it comes to healthcare workers however, I feel everyone has a role when it comes it dealing with healthcare. This is also coming from someone who wants to hopefully get a career in the medical field.
