This Is What I know about Art- Kelly Bartko

“As time went on, I also realized that I didn't get  many opportunities to learn about the artists and movements that got me interested in art in the first place. There have been black people since the beginning of time, but I was not seeing any of their art in any of my classes.” page 20 Its crazy to think some people still teach like that. Not everyone is interested in the same thing. Different types and styles of art from different people is what truly helps people learn and decipher what they truly are interested in. Only seeing one kind of art that is what you are going to think is the only kind of art, to different things is what makes people have different interests and that is how we are able to learn from each other.

“I wasn't at work or hustling to art events for free food, I continued to cultivate my blog. It was my refuge. The more art I saw, the more I wanted to share it with others.” pg 33  everyone needs an outlet, a safe space in order to be yourself and share what you want the world to know about you. It is necessary for everyone to have this safe space no matter what you are into or what you are.This safe space is where you can tailor everything to yourself and everything can be only about you.

“By the end of the meeting, she asked me to think deeply about what I wanted to say, and, more importantly, how I wanted it to be interpreted. It was not just enough to be angry. I had to be strategic.” pg 43 This is in reference to her posting something online and Thelma Golden calling her into her office and talking to her about it. are many different ways to get your points across and to have them mean different things. Sometimes it takes someone who has been in the game longer to help you achieve what you need.

Faith Ringgold, Woman Freedom Now, 1970

This artwork is interesting to me because even though this was made in 1970 It is still relevant to today's system unfortunately. I like how it is not just saying but demanding Women Freedom Now. This actually relates to the Thelma golden quote from before in the same way that she suggested thinking about how you have to be strategic when you are trying to get your point across and I feel like this does that perfectly.
