This Is What I Know About Art - Kimberly Drew
Quote #1:
"During my meeting with Thelma, she told me about the consequences of my actions and generously taught me that my voice was a powerful one."
I believe this is an important quote because we sometimes fail to realize that our voice alone can be powerful and used to stand up for what we believe in. Using your voice and speaking up has a bigger impact then we think. Our voice can even be considered as art in a way as we use it to express ourselves and perspectives.
Quote #2:
"Though I appreciated my fellowship, I could not help but be frustrated by my environment. When i was hired, I was one of the five people of color in our office. two of us were on temporary fellowship, two were unpaid interns, and one of us was working full time as a curatorial assistant. This meant that the only person of color on staff was likely earning one of the lowest salaries on the curatorial team if not within the entire organization."
I picked this quote because work discrimination is more common than we think. Whether its receiving unequal pay or unequal job opportunities I think a person's ability and skills shouldn't be judged based on a person's race. She described how frustrated she felt being in an environment where her skills weren't valued as the others were. She also saw how the others in workplace weren't being given reasonable salaries then meet up with their work.
Quote #3:
"Protest is way more complicated than communicating rage. Small actions foster change. Our activism, like any other part of ourselves, developed into something bigger than a singular experience. Activism is a collective action and an investment in the lives of other people."
I chose this quote because protests are an important part to spreading and sending a message about what we find important and impactful. small actions like creating posters or flyers to protest an issue can make a difference. protests are shown in many ways especially through art. Activism can be done even at times we don't notice yet it can make a change in some way.
Kimberly Drews Artwork from Tumblr Blog
I chose this artwork from Kimberly Drews blog because I think for many people reading can be an escape and way of expression. Alot can also be learned and gained from reading. With more knowledge from what we learn we have the ability to know more which gives us power. Reading can give us advantage and a different perspective on different topics. It broadens our views and insight and makes us think. I would name the exhibition under "Freedom of Thought".
