Preformance Art Activism Post - Kobi-Lee Sanchez

Yoko Ono - A Groundbreaking Artist, Activist, and Fighter behind the Myth of her Name

"Yoko Ono rather perceives it as a direct connection with activism. Her style often included “dematerialization of the art object,” which is a phrase that would only come to use when the art critic Lucy Lippard employed it to talk about the practice of turning away from objects and towards ideas."

"Cut Piece was one of the best examples where the visceral presence of the author confronted the tension between exhibitionism and voyeurism, masochism and sadism, between victim and assailant. The piece was lauded as an enactment of the physical vulnerability of women in a world where they are reduced to mere objects for looking at."

Yoko Ono's perspective on activism and dematerialization allowed her to step away from art and turn to performance activism, which allowed not only her as the subject but also the audience to be involved. Cut Piece showed this idea of "dematerialization of the art object" because she used herself as a subject and gave power to the audience. The audience was the idea and the act of the performance activism and has been allowed to be broken down and interpreted by the audience themselves, although they are performing as well.

Performance, Pedagogy, and Philosophy

"I [don’t] recall ever being dissuaded [by the fact] that those “masters” were all dead white men. I found myself seeing these “great artworks” and believing I could achieve that."

His young view showed his inner artist. He did not feel afraid or feel insecure about what he could do. He knew that he had the ability to learn and recreate beautiful and meaningful art.

"I think the larger challenge surrounding not only the pandemic but also the converging crises of racial justice, reproductive rights, and everything else is the immediacy with which we are being called upon to act. This is infiltrated and influenced by social media and the sort of commotion and chaos of the news cycle: we feel compelled to act, act, act—to respond, respond, respond—and artists don’t operate best in that rhythm. Artists need to take in, process, decipher, separate from the noise, and create beautiful and impactful things to the spirit. Artists have to offer a different type of slowness to work against the speed of today."

Art is supposed to be given thought and planned out because it is necessary there is a purpose for the artwork and an idea that can be taken away from the performative art. The idea behind it and the purpose allow the audience to interpret the movement and take away an idea of activism to make the audience act. Art takes time and finding the idea that will be behind the performative activism takes longer. The performance must reach the audience to achieve its purpose.

What is Performance Activism?

Performative Activism occurs when a subject actively performs an artist in front of a live audience to move the audience to act for a cause or movement communicated by the performance. Performance art is meant to be interactive; however, it can be spontaneous or planned/scripted to play out in a certain way.

An Art Performance that can be performed for an audience would be:
To produce 3 pieces of work all that relate to current issues in the world and asking the audience to interpret.

The audience can give critique or add what is missing to the art on display with tools provided by the artist.
